JD child protection assessment and training
As an Independent Sexual Crime/Child Protection Consultant, Jo Duncombe offers assessment and treatment of male and female abusers, alleged abusers, non-abusing partners and other carers and provides Intervention and Education programmes where necessary.
Jo began her career working with offenders in 1994 at Northamptonshire Probation Service, after graduating from
Leicester University with a MA and DipSW (Criminal Justice).
Working with high risk offenders, Jo worked with colleagues developing the sex offender treatment programme
delivered to individuals convicted of sexual offences against children, and who were subject to Probation Orders and
post release licence, in a group format and on an individual basis. Moving to Warwickshire Probation Service, Jo
continued to work with high risk offenders, including sex offenders and, as a Senior Practitioner, was responsible for
supervising Probation Officers and other Probation staff.
In 2001 Jo began working for RWA Child Protection Services (formerly Ray Wyre Associates), focussing on working
with males and females accused of, or convicted for sexual offences against children.
In her role within RWA Child Protection Services, Jo Duncombe has undertaken risk assessments of men and women
where there are concerns about risk of harm to children; specialist risk assessments have been commissioned by
Local Authorities, Criminal and Family Courts. Jo is frequently called upon to attend Child Protection Conferences and
give evidence as an Expert Witness in these courts.
In order to minimise risk to children where child abuse has occurred or is suspected, Jo has considerable experience of carrying out assessments and facilitating educative interventions with partners and other carers in order to firstly ascertain, and secondly, increase their ability to protect the children.
Alongside and often an integral part of the family dynamics involved in families where sexual abuse is alleged or has occurred, are other issues such as domestic violence, substance misuse and other types of familial abuse. Jo’s experience of working with these issues, initially within the Probation Service, was readily transferable when making the links between these issues and sexual crime as an Independent Consultant.
Jo is experienced in presenting training programmes and speaking at conferences, both in the UK and in Europe, and has been called upon to give opinions via the media on current, and sometimes controversial issues, related to sexual crime.
